About

Steinway and Sons is an American piano manufacturer headquartered in New York City (with manufacturing in Astoria, Queens, NY), founded in 1853 by Heinrich Engelhard Steinway. The company builds acoustic grand pianos and upright pianos at two factories: Astoria, New York (for the North and South American market) and Hamburg, Germany (for the European and Asian market). Every Steinway piano is assembled by hand from approximately 12,000 individual parts over a period of about one year per instrument. The Model D (concert grand, 272 cm) is the world's most widely used concert piano: Steinway estimates that approximately 98% of solo concert pianists worldwide perform on Steinway instruments. The full range also includes the Model B (211 cm), Model A (188 cm), Model O (180 cm), and Model S baby grand, as well as the Steinway Crown Jewel Collection limited editions with figured wood finishes. The company also owns the Boston Piano (mid-market) and Essex (entry-level) brands, built to Steinway specifications in Japan and China respectively. Wholesale access is through the Steinway authorised dealer network, covering premium music dealers in over 60 countries.
